Food Network darling Ray wants home cooks to become more “instinctual,” and this assortment of quick meals is expansive enough to encourage even novices to wing it. The author hopes readers cook their way through the entire book; to that end, she organizes the recipes not by course or main ingredient (though there are indexes), but by number. The organization takes some getting used to. Helpful but occasionally jarring “tidbits” pop up everywhere, and many “recipes” make more than one dish, so cooking just one requires a fair amount of reading. For example, number 16 encompasses “Oregon-Style Pork Chops with Pinot Noir and Cranberries; Oregon Hash with Wild Mushrooms, Greens, Beets, Hazelnuts, and Blue Cheese; [and] Charred Whole-Grain Bread with Butter and Chives.” Readers making just the hash must read around the instructions for the other two dishes. Still, the recipes are great. They vary in technique and ethnicity, and many give instructions on expanding the dish (after making Spicy Shrimp and Penne with Puttanesca Sauce, for example, “now try” omitting the olives and capers, swapping linguine for the penne, reducing the number of shrimp, and adding lump crab meat and mussels to make Frutti di Mare and Linguine). Built for business, the imageCLASS D880 is a powerful device designed to produce high quality laser output for busy small offices. Equipped with Canon’s single cartridge system, the unit is virtually maintenance-free. Just put in the cartridge, make the proper connections, and you are ready to copy, print and receive faxes.
For copying, use the platen glass for single page originals or the 30-sheet automatic document feeder for multi-page originals. Program the quantity needed and you’re done. Multi-page documents will be collated in the output tray. You will have a large supply of paper using the 500-sheet paper cassette and the 100-sheet multipurpose tray to draw from. The multipurpose tray can accommodate a variety of sizes and types of paper stock. The imageCLASS D880 copies at 18 copies-per-minute (cpm) for letter-size documents. Using Canon’s Advanced Printing Technology (CAPT), the imageCLASS D880 also prints with high-quality laser resolution of 2,400 x 600 dpi at up to 16 pages-per-minute (ppm) for letter-size prints.

Fax and receive documents with ease. Documents will transmit with Super G3 (33.6 Kbps) modem speed, which keeps phone line costs down. With a host of convenient features like 12 Speed Dials, 100 Coded Dials, 255-page memory backup and print in order, faxing will be simple and effortless.

Begun as an as-told-to by Dalla with Stuey Ungar, this biography tells in painful detail the story of the poker and gin superstar. Ungar is certainly a fascinating subject. He was prodigiously dysfunctional, a manic sports bettor and cocaine addict who won an estimated $30 million during his life, but who, after his death in 1998, needed a collection from his friends to pay for his funeral. Unfortunately, the complexities of Ungar’s personality aren’t satisfactorily unraveled by the authors. They offer stories from the likes of poker legend Doyle Brunson and Mike Sexton, television’s reigning poker guru, of Ungar’s fabulous skills as a card player and spectacular need for “action,” but few insights into the source of Ungar’s self-destructive demons: he died prematurely at age 45 from the ravages of drug abuse. Without any analysis, the repetitious account of years of poker ups and downs, sports gambling losses, manic acts of generosity and descents into drug abuse, as tragic as it is, becomes tedious. Still, without distorting or downplaying Ungar’s depredations, this is a heartfelt, respectful and accepting biography.
